Discussing "Push" with Johanna

Johanna, from class 602, and I were discussing the book Push by Sapphire. We were commenting on how difficult her life was. Johanna talked about how much the main character "was hit by her own mother" and how "she was kicked out of school."

I asked Johanna a few questions and these are her answers:

Ms. K - How did the book make you feel?

Johanna - The book made me feel very sad. She passed through all of that and she also got raped by her father. One of her kids is mental and the other one just came out normal.

Ms. K. - Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not?

Johanna - Yes, because it lets them know what others feel like with parents like that. They might learn how she feels when they read it.

Ms. K - Which group or groups of people would you recommend to read this book?

Johanna - I think this book is for everybody except little kids because they wouldn't understand it.

Ms. K - What was your favorite part of the book?

Johanna - The part where her math teacher slammed the book on the table because the teacher said to turn to page 122. She heard him but she didn't do it. She told the teacher to be quiet and teach math.

Ms. K - Why was that your favorite part?

Johanna - I liked that part because it made the math teacher feel embarrassed and that was kind of funny. His face turned red. That's how mad he was. I remember a time when my brother got "butt whooping" by my mother. I was laughing at him and his face turned red and he wanted to kill me. That was funny.

Reflection on the inadequacies of the NYC BOE and technology

We sit in an hot auditorium which will never have airconditioning, very reflective of a typical NYC Board of Education school. We discuss things that are often blocked, censored and feared by educators, parents and mostly edu-crats throughout America. Learning via Internet is like sex to teenagers. You can tell 'em not to, watch them like hawks, attempt to give them ethics and morals regarding it, but whatever we do, they will be "doin' it" anyway. The question becomes "How can I integrate that which they use already into my classroom?"
